Huawei confirms Kirin 990 name, launch date: Here’s what else we know so far

The Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset is set to be succeeded by the Kirin 990.

Huawei usually delivers a new Kirin chipset in its Mate series every year, a tradition dating back to the Huawei Mate 8 at the very least. We’re expecting a new processor in the Mate 30 series later this year, and Huawei has just given us a launch date and name for the new chipset.
The company uploaded a teaser video to YouTube (h/t: MySmartPrice), confirming the Kirin 990 name and a September 6 launch date. This date coincides with Huawei’s IFA event in Berlin.
It wouldn’t be the first time Huawei launched a Kirin chipset at IFA, as it previously did this for the Kirin 980 last year and the Kirin 970 in 2017. They then followed up these events with Mate 20 series and Mate 10 series launches

?What to expect from Kirin 990

The video specifically mentions 5G tech, which means this new processor will undoubtedly offer 5G support. But could the Kirin 990 integrate the 5G modem into its design or will the modem remain separate from the chipset as was the case in the Kirin 980?
A 5G modem integrated into the Kirin 990 could enable better power efficiency in theory than pairing a separate 5G modem with the chipset. But it’s unclear whether Huawei is ready to deliver an integrated solution just yet. Still, a chipset with integrated 5G could result in much wider adoption of 5G phones, as devices equipped with the processor could all support 5G in theory (no need to look for a 5G variant).
Otherwise, early rumors hinted at a 7nm EUV manufacturing process, with EUV the foundation for future chipset designs. Neowin also reported this week that the Kirin 990 is tipped to offer 4K/60fps recording for the first time in the Kirin series.
Huawei is generally quick to adopt Arm’s latest CPU and GPU technology, so we can also expect Cortex-A77 CPU cores and the Mali-G77 GPU. We can also be sure of an improved NPU. In fact, Huawei’s Kirin 810 processor offered an NPU based on its in-house Da Vinci architecture for the first time. Don’t be surprised if the firm adopts this architecture for use in the Kirin 990 too.
