Nest’s video doorbell can now detect packages left at your doorstep

Image
In an age where you literally don’t have to leave your house to buy anything, it’s no wonder why video doorbells and  security  cameras have grown to be so popular. People want to know when other people are at their doorstep, whether it’s simply to greet friends or to see when your  Amazon  package has arrived. The thing is, many video doorbells don’t tell you exactly what’s at your door — much of the time you get a generic notification telling you  something  is there, just not  what  is there. Starting today, the  Nest Hello  video doorbell  will be able to notify you  when packages arrive at your doorstep. The feature, available for U.S. residents only, will roll out to Nest Hello owners who also subscribe to the  Nest Aware  video recording service in the coming days. “We started hearing many people use Nest Hello for welcoming visitors and for security purposes, but people also use [Nest Hello] for packa...

Moto G8 or G8 Plus tipped to offer solid power boost, triple cameras

Image
The  Motorola Moto G7  and G7 Plus are two of the  better budget phones  in the U.S. right now, offering a dual-camera setup and solid if unspectacular chipsets. Now,  XDA-Developers  may have obtained key specs for a Moto G8 series device via a source. The outlet isn’t sure if the specs are related to the Moto G8 or the Moto G8 Plus, but it certainly suggests a solid upgrade over the previous phones. According to  XDA , the new Moto G8 model has a  Snapdragon 665  processor, much like the  Xiaomi Mi A3  series and  Realme 5 . The octa-core Snapdragon 665 is a direct follow-up to the Snapdragon 660, offering the same Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53 CPU cores but bringing an improved GPU, a 2x power boost for AI, and a smaller manufacturing process. In other words, you can expect a pretty solid improvement over the  Moto G7  in terms of gaming, battery life, and AI capabilities. Furthermore, it’s believed that the...

Image
1. Samsung Galaxy Fold 2: new, just-filed patents intrigue No one on the planet has yet been able to buy and own a   Samsung Galaxy Fold , yet. But, already, 3D product renders of its successor have been released. Dutch tech site  LetsGoDigital  has based the following renders off  three key patents from Samsung filed within the past two weeks . That’s allowed for some intriguing renders to follow Samsung’s lead and evolve the Fold into the Fold 2, with three model design options: Same but different: In the above image, Model B and C are the most like the current  Galaxy Fold , with a small front screen, a triple camera on the back, and the device opening out into a larger tablet-sized display. The notch is a big difference. Model B has a svelte notch for cameras and other tech on the top right of the device. Model C has it at the top-left of the device, the only difference between these two designs/patents. All new: Model A is much more...

Malicious websites were used to secretly hack into iPhones for years, says Google

Image
Security researchers at Google say they’ve found a number of malicious websites which, when visited, could quietly hack into a victim’s iPhone by exploiting a set of previously undisclosed software flaws. Google’s Project Zero said in  a deep-dive blog post  published late on Thursday that the websites were visited thousands of times per week by unsuspecting victims, in what they described as an “indiscriminate” attack. “Simply visiting the hacked site was enough for the exploit server to attack your device, and if it was successful, install a monitoring implant,” said Ian Beer, a security researcher at Project Zero. He said the websites had been hacking iPhones over a “period of at least two years.” The researchers found five distinct exploit chains involving 12 separate security flaws, including seven involving Safari, the in-built web browser on iPhones. The five separate attack chains allowed an attacker to gain “root” access to the device — the highest level of...

Image
Android 10 isn't just the first Android iteration to bear a two-digit version number, it's also the first ( since 1.0 and 1.1 ) that doesn't come with an official dessert name attached to it. With the upcoming OS, Google has decided to only rely on numbers to reduce potential confusion due to users with different cultural backgrounds all around the world. That doesn't mean the company doesn't have a sweet name up its sleeve, though. During an  All About Android podcast , two Googlers revealed that they would've called Android 10 Queen Cake externally and are calling it Quince Tart internally – with the former  already leaked to the public  before. In the podcast, VP of Android engineering Dave Burke and software engineer Dan Sandler talk about the Android brand and how it didn't come about with a "huge amount of thought" – instead, they just created it with "the minimum they could to get started." Until now, branding has only ever ...
