Samsung already pushing out December security patch even though it’s November

Image
According to  SamMobile , certain Samsung devices are now receiving the December security patch. This is unusual considering we are still in November and even Google Pixel devices haven’t seen the December patch yet. The new security patch is hitting  Samsung Galaxy Note 10  and  Samsung Galaxy Note 9  devices in Europe. The update lands as software version N97*FXXS1ASKB for the Note 10 across 25 different countries while the Note 9 version comes in as N960FXXS4CSK2 to Germany only. Reportedly, there are no new software updates or feature additions with this patch. It’s just the December security patch and nothing more. This makes sense considering Samsung is neck-deep right now in  various Android 10 beta programs  for its flagships and is expected to push out a stable version of One UI 2.0 to various handsets  very soon . If you live in Europe and own a Note 10 or Note 10 Plus, you can check right now for the December security patch. Just open the Settings app, select Softwa

This iPhone app will make you nostalgic for the iPod click wheel

Image
An iOS developer is building an iPhone app that will turn the smartphone into an iPod Classic with its nostalgic click wheel. Elvin Hu, a design student at Cooper Union college in New York City, has been working on the project since October, and  shared an early look  at the app on Twitter yesterday. It essentially turns your iPhone into a fullscreen iPod Classic with a click wheel that includes haptic feedback and click sounds just like Apple’s original device. It has generated a lot of interest on Twitter, with even the “ father of the iPod ,” Tony Fadell, noting it’s a “ nice throwback .” Hu built the app because he was working on a paper about the development of the iPod at school. “I’ve always been a fan of Apple products since I was a kid,” revealed Hu in an email to  The Verge. “ Before my family could afford one, I would draw the UI layout of iPhone on lids of Ferrero Rocher boxes. Their products (among other products, such as Windows Vista and Zune HD) have greatly i

Bad RCS implementations are creating big vulnerabilities, security researchers claim

Image
Security researchers at SRLabs have found a number of vulnerabilities with the way carriers around the world are implementing RCS, the new messaging standard designed to replace SMS,  Motherboard  reports . In some cases, these issues could compromise a user’s location data, they could allow their text messages or calls to be intercepted, or they might allow their phone number to be spoofed. One issue identified on an unnamed carrier’s implementation could allow any app on your phone to download your RCS configuration file, for example, giving the app your username and password and allowing it to access all your voice calls and text messages. In another case, the six-digit code a carrier uses to verify a user’s identity was vulnerable to being guessed through brute force by a third-party. These problems were found after researchers analyzed a sample of SIM cards from several different carriers. RCS is a new messaging standard that’s designed to one day replace SMS as a means of

Apple removes customer reviews from its online store

Image
Apple has removed customer reviews from its online store, as first  reported by  AppleInsider , and we’ve confirmed this to be the case.  AppleInsider  got a tip from a reader that the reviews had been removed from the US, UK, and Australian Apple Stores (which we have also confirmed). If you want to see the changes for yourself, you can look at the Wayback Machine archives for the original Apple Pencil for  November 16th  and  November 17th , as found by  AppleInsider.  On the November 17th capture, you can see that the “Ratings & Reviews” section is gone. Apple’s choice means that customers can’t provide useful feedback on the products available on Apple’s store — especially if a product might be bad. There were at least 735 one-star reviews for  the Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter , for example, but now you can’t tell if it’s good or not just by looking at that page. We’ve asked Apple for comment and will update this story with anything we hear back.

What to expect from Tesla’s Cybertruck pickup truck event

Image
On Thursday night at 11PM ET, Elon Musk will appear onstage at the Tesla Design Center in Los Angeles to reveal the product he’s  most excited about : Tesla’s first electric pickup truck. And while the CEO has teased the truck on and off  for six years , with increased hype at every turn, it’s still not super clear what’s in store. Unlike, say,  the Model Y  reveal  earlier this year , Musk has played this one somewhat close to the chest. Yes, Musk has said he drew inspiration from  Blade Runner  in designing the truck. It’s also called (or at least codenamed) “Cybertruck,” with an appropriately science-fiction-style,  vowel-dropped logo  to boot. We have a rough idea of some specs that will be offered. And we know he wants to combine  Porsche-level performance with utility that makes a Ford F-150 look like a Tonka truck . As for what it looks like, though, everyone is still in the dark. Like, literally — Tesla has only released a few  really  murky   teaser images  for the truck.
