Next-gen iPad Pro 12.9 with mini-LED screen might be delayed and that's a good thing

Image
We’ve only just had new  iPad Pro 2020  models, but rumors had suggested that another new model  would land later this year  with some more significant upgrades. Now though, it sounds like we’ll have to wait longer. In an investor note seen by  MacRumors , Jeff Pu (an analyst at GF Securities) claimed that Apple’s iPad Pro overhaul might be delayed until early 2021 due to the “complex panel design”. The big upgrade on this model is rumored to be the display, which could be moving from LCD to mini-LED – a tech that allows for thinner, lighter screens, with less risk of burn-in than with OLED, and which should be an even bigger upgrade on the LCD used by current iPad Pro models. But if Pu is right then this upgrade is proving hard to implement. A delay is a good thing While this news might be disappointing, it actually probably makes sense for Apple to push the launch into 2021. There was a near 18-month gap between the  iPad Pro 11 (2018)  and the iPad Pro 2020, yet

How to use your laptop as a monitor

Image
In this guide, we show you how to use your laptop as a monitor or second screen. The main benefits of laptops are clear – they’re portable, allowing you to work freely and flexibly wherever you like. But when you’re sitting at a desk, or don’t have another display device available, most people overlook the fact you can use your laptop as a monitor.  The easiest option is to extend your laptop’s display across multiple monitors, which is a great way to boost your productivity. You can view multiple web pages or cross reference a document with ease, without flicking between loads of tabs. Rather than simply mirroring your laptop’s screen on the monitor, by extending it, it means you can use both screens to show different apps and content. Alternatively, you can use your laptop to extend a desktop’s display or act as another monitor. It’s a slightly more complicated process, as your laptop outputs its display only, and isn’t really designed to output the display of another devi

Leica and Olympus are offering free virtual courses and talks for photographers

Camera makers Leica and Olympus have announced initiatives to offer free  courses and talks for photographers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Many companies that cater to creative fields have opened up resources for those currently stuck at home, and last week Nikon made its entire curriculum of online photography classes  free until the end of April . For its part, Olympus has launched “Home With Olympus Sessions” to connect people with Olympus technical experts. Photographers can sign up for group or one-on-one sessions to ask specific questions, get feedback, and learn more about their Olympus cameras from home. The group sessions are capped at six people and are themed around particular camera models and types of photography, like landscape, macro, and underwater. There’s limited space so if you’re interested, head over to Olympus’  website to sign up . Meanwhile, Leica is rolling out a series of  free online discussions  led by renowned photographers, musicians, actors, and o

Google almost immediately abandons widely-hated Google logo on Gboard space bar

Image
U PDATE: 2020/04/10 2:36PM PDT This article has been updated to reflect that Google is rolling back to the logo-free space bar. The magic of server-side rollouts means that a change can roll out to almost everyone's devices at the same time, regardless of OS or app versions. That's exactly what happened over the past few days, as the Google logo appeared on the space bar in the Gboard keyboard, but the change has seemingly already been reversed. You may have noticed the Google logo appearing on your device's Gboard keyboard earlier today (or yesterday). The change was also accompanied by the removal of the Google search shortcut in Gboard, which allowed you to perform simple web searches without leaving your current task. If Gboard's language was set to something other than the system default, the spacebar displayed the language name instead. L eft:  New logo in the spacebar.  Right:  Chosen language in the spacebar. The change quickly drew criti
