OnePlus promises at least 3 years of Android TV updates on upcoming OnePlus TV

Image
There have been rumors of a OnePlus TV for ages, but now it's really, finally about to happen. The company has been dropping tidbits of info since  confirming the device  earlier this month. We're used to the company's phone getting good update support, and CEO Pete Lau says we can expect the same from the TV. The Android TV platform will get updates for "at least three years." OnePlus is pushing the "fast and smooth" angle for its TV, claiming that its close partnership with Google will allow it to optimize Android TV to a higher degree. It's not like OnePlus has a lot of competition. Sony makes some HDTVs with Android TV pre-loaded, and then there are devices like the JBL Link Bar and NVIDIA SHIELD. And honestly, the SHIELD is the only Android TV device of consequence right now. NVIDIA has done a magnificent job keeping the SHIELD TV updated, but OnePlus might give it a run for its money with the OnePlus TV. This is OP's first TV and t

Gmail finally adds that smooth swipe gesture for switching accounts, plus signs of dark mode [APK Download]

Image
UPDATE: 2019/08/29 12:43AM PDT This release also contains the first signs of dark mode in Gmail. Both the app's widget and the splash screen have a dark variation to suit the system-wide theme on Miracles do happen, folks. Over the past couple of weeks, we've seen  Google Maps , then  Drive  and  Contacts  add that nifty account switching gesture, and all we've wanted was for it to make its way to Gmail. That's where most of us often move between inboxes and accounts, many times a day. However, at the pace the Gmail team likes to implement change (cf. dark mode), we were thinking it might take months for the feature to trickle down to the app. But lo-and-behold, it's now there. Gmail version 2019.08.18 is the one you need to get that sweet swipin'. Like the previous iterations, you simply swipe up or down on your avatar in the top right and that triggers the account switch. You can still tap it to open up the full account picker interface, but the

Tesla launched a car insurance product, then spent the next 24 hours fixing it

Image
Just a few hours after Tesla launched its in-house car insurance product in California on August 28th, the company stopped offering rate quotes and suspended access to the insurance website. It now appears to be live again as of 8PM ET on August 29th. But even during the time Tesla’s insurance site   was   working and offering owners quotes, some people weren’t happy with the results. Tesla tells  The Verge  those two things are actually related; the company says it found “bugs” that were affecting some customers’ rate quotes, but it declined to offer any specifics beyond that. The company said it will get the website back up as soon as that’s resolved, without saying when that resolution might be. We found it had gone live again as of this evening. Tesla’s insurance mini-site launched  around 3PM ET on Wednesday , but users reported trouble accessing the site within just a few hours. At 6:49PM ET, the company  tweeted  it was “making some updates to Tesla Insurance” and tha

Microsoft unveils new tablet experience for Windows 10

Image
Microsoft is planning to redesign the tablet experience for Windows 10. The software giant has started testing a new design for 2-in-1 convertible PCs that will keep the user interface more similar to the existing desktop design. Currently, Windows 10 throws you into a more tablet-optimized UI that removes task bar icons and puts the Start menu full-screen when a device automatically switches into “tablet mode.” Microsoft is now walking back some of those changes, while keeping some touch-optimized elements for 2-in-1 PCs. In the new tablet experience, the desktop will remain in full view, with the task bar icons visible and increased spacing between them. If enabled, the search box will collapse into an icon, and the touch keyboard will appear when you tap on a text field. File Explorer will also switch to a touch-optimized layout. We’ll have to try these design tweaks fully to see how many other changes have been made. Microsoft is testing this with Windows Insiders and has ma

How to use Google Pay

Image
Google Pay is a digital wallet and online payment system that’s developed by Google to make it easy for you to make purchases. It automatically syncs your saved credit cards wherever your Google account is logged in for quick payments, and it  will import loyalty cards, tickets, and offers  from your Gmail account.  Google Pay  is supported at  most major markets, gas stations, and department stores . Setting up Google Pay is straightforward. WHAT DO I NEED TO SET UP GOOGLE PAY? You need a debit / credit card or PayPal account, a Google account, and a supported Google Pay device (a non-rooted Android phone using KitKat 4.4 and up, a Wear OS watch, or a desktop / laptop computer). You can even use it  with an iOS device  (although you can only use the account to pay online, not in a store). HOW DO I ADD PAYMENT ACCOUNTS TO GOOGLE PAY? If you only plan to use Google Pay online to pay for, say, Google Play movies or apps, then you can set up your account from your Google Play

Telltale Games employees speak out about the studio’s controversial revival

Image
Telltale Games is being revived, but news of its return has been met with a blend of joy, confusion, and bitterness. A company called  LCG Entertainment announced on Wednesday  that it has acquired the Telltale Games name as well as some of its back catalog, and a parcel of its intellectual properties. It announced plans to make use of the studio’s signature adventure game design tools; to pursue some of Telltale’s former third-party licenses; and to hire former Telltale staff, initially on a contract basis. Still, questions remain about the new company’s intent. How far does an unrelated company purchasing the remains of an old company in these circumstances constitute a revival? How does the new company relate to the fall of the original Telltale, which closed down last year with the loss of more than 250 jobs. What is the status of the former employees who are now working under contract? On social media, various claims have been doing the rounds since the  announcement
