The Moto E6 debuts on Verizon Wireless for just $149, we go hands-on

Image
If you’re in the market for a sub-$200 smartphone, Motorola might have the handset for you. The  Motorola Moto E6  sees Motorola’s entry-level series upping the ante while keeping its affordable price tag intact. Verizon Wireless is selling the phone in the U.S. at launch, and Motorola says other carriers will follow over time. The Moto E6 may be a simple, unassuming device and that might be what makes it so charming. Motorola Moto E6: Engaging, not enigmatic Don’t expect the world for a song. Motorola is targeting the value segment of the market with the Moto E6 and that means hardware with lofty ambitions firmly in check. The phone boasts a 5.5-inch Full HD+ screen with Motorola’s Max Vision 18:9 aspect ratio. This is the same shape we saw on Motorola’s  Moto One Vision  earlier this year. I can’t say that the display won me over. The  IPS LCD  screen, protected by a flat panel of glass, came across as dull to my eyes and it leans toward blue in terms of hue. A pixel density

Nokia 8.2 tipped for 32MP pop-up selfie camera and Android Q

HMD Global  is readying its first smartphone with a pop-up camera, according to speculation from  MySmartPrice . The rumored device is believed to be the Nokia 8.2, a sequel to the  Nokia 8.1  from last December, and it’s being tipped to launch soon running  Android Q . The handset is expected to come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage, while earlier rumors had suggested it would feature a Snapdragon 700 series or Snapdragon 735 chip.  MySmartPrice ‘s source is tipster  Ishan Agarwal  who has contributed substantial Android leaks in the past. The pop-up selfie camera is said to have a 32MP sensor — a popular choice among midrange Chinese handsets like the   Xiaomi Mi CC series . We don’t know anything about the Nokia 8.2’s other cameras, but the original Nokia 8.1 had a dual rear camera design with Zeiss optics. The original also based on   Android One . ? When should we expect the Nokia 8.2 Given that Google is expected to launch Android Q next month, there’s

[Update: B&H Photo] The JBL Link Bar is finally available for purchase

Image
UPDATE: 2019/07/25 11:13AM PDT The JBL Link Bar just showed up at B&H's digital storefront, so if you have B&H gift cards hanging around from previous promotions or should you like to save JBL and Google announced the Link Bar more than a year ago, but the first sound bar with Android TV built in didn't launch on time. In fact, it has been  pushed back repeatedly  from late 2018, to  spring 2019 , and  finally to summer . And here we are—the Link Bar appears to finally be live on JBL's site for $399.95. Since it's been a while, here's a quick refresher. The Link Bar is a 100W sound bar with multiple HDMI inputs. When the TV is on, it functions as a full-fledged Android TV box. When it's off, the Link Bar still has a far-field microphone with Google Assistant ready and willing to accept voice commands. Now, you can order the device from JBL directly, where the Link Bar is "in stock and ready to ship." We can confirm it's avai

The Google Pixelbook 2 may have just showed up at the FCC

Image
Google might have officially  given up  on making its own tablets, but we've still been patiently waiting for a new Chrome OS laptop from its hardware division. The original Pixelbook is beautifully designed, and even though  we concluded  that its cost-benefit ratio leans on the more expensive side for the vast majority of consumers, it still showcases how good Chrome OS devices can be — that keyboard is to die for. With the laptop being on the market for more than a year and a half, we're more than ready for a successor by now. A new FCC filing offers hope that a Pixelbook 2 could be on the horizon. Google partner Quanta Computer Wireless has requested the ID  HFSG021A . Ignoring the first three characters, we're looking at Google's regular naming scheme, with devices such as the Pixel 3 and 3a carrying identifiers like  G013A  and  G020A.  For the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate, the IDs  HFSC0A  and  HFSC1A  were used, which means  G021A  sounds more like a Pixel p

Intel sells its modem business to Apple for $1 billion

Image
Apple develops its own processors for its mobile devices, but it relies on modems from Intel and Qualcomm for network connectivity. While Apple fought with Qualcomm over patents and royalties, Intel became the company's top choice for modems. After  the dispute was settled ,  Intel gave up trying to make a 5G modem , and now Apple is buying its entire modem division. In a press release, Apple announced that it is acquiring "the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business," including intellectual property, equipment, and leases. The deal is valued at $1 billion, and around 2,200 Intel employees are expected to join Apple. Once the acquisition is complete (likely in Q4 2019, pending regulatory approval), Apple intends to develop its own 5G modems to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm. The iPhone XS used modems exclusively from Intel, though  Apple says Qualcomm refused to supply them . Sadly, this leaves Qualcomm as the only choice for 5G Android phones for the fore

Samsung will give you up to $600 on trade-in for a Pixel 3, iPhone X, Note9, or Galaxy S10 if you buy a Galaxy Note10

Image
Samsung's reservation page for the "next generation of Galaxy" (i.e., the Galaxy Note10) just went live, and with it comes a table of trade-in values. Parties interested in swapping their old phone for Samsung's upcoming hardware can get up to $600 in value if they send in a Galaxy S10-series phone, iPhone X variant, or Pixel 3. Note that at the time of writing, that's   full credit   for a   Pixel 3's as-new price . Pixel trade-in values. So far, the page only lists trade-in values for Google's devices (pictured above), Samsung's handsets, and Apple's iPhones. Only flagship-level devices from the last three or four years are listed. The oldest thing that will be accepted for trade-in is the iPhone 6S, which will net you a sizable $250 off. Humorously, that's more of a discount than the later Galaxy S7 or S8 will get you. While Google, Samsung, and Apple's latest will net you $600 in credit, phones over about a year old fall of

New Nvidia Shield TV clears FCC, could launch soon with updated hardware

Image
Last month, a new version of the Nvidia Shield TV was  spotted in the Play Console device catalog . Aside from running Android 9 Pie straight out of the box, the new revision — codenamed "mdarcy" to the previous iteration's "darcy" — didn't seem drastically different. What seems to be that refreshed version passed the FCC's certification process today. We can't tell a whole lot from the filing — the FCC is primarily concerned with wireless communication (bombshell: this new Shield  does  have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), and there are no photos of the device. One interesting tidbit is that it seems likely from labeling that the player will ditch the 2017 model's bulky wall wart in favor of an internal power supply, which could help simplify the mass of cables and plugs behind your TV. Mdarcy's Play Console listing mentions the same Tegra X1 T210 chipset used in the 2017 Shield TV. There are  rumors  that the SoC is due for a refresh, and th
