LG V40's kernel source code is already available

Image
It's not unusual for kernel source codes to be published before phones/updates even debut, but just two days after  LG took the wraps off of the V40 , the kernel source code for various models has already been published. Five variants of the V40 (LMV405) are listed on LG's OpenSource Code Distribution site: TA, TAB, TM, TMB, and TS. The file names remind us that this brand-new $1,000 flagship ships with Oreo, which is a shame. Each file comes in at over 200MB. If you're a developer and you're looking to make some custom ROMs or recoveries for the V40, you may want to check these out

Google Duo v41 prepares contact pinning and calling Home devices linked to your account [APK Teardown]

Image
The latest version of Google Duo has landed, but like so many other updates, it doesn't appear to change anything immediately upon installation. However, as tradition dictates, there are a couple of interesting things to see from a teardown. It looks like Duo will be adding support for pinning contacts to the top of your list for convenient access. You should also be able to begin making calls to smart displays linked to your account for an easy way to call home. Teardown Disclaimer: Teardowns are based on evidence found inside of apks (Android's application package) and are necessarily speculative and usually based on incomplete information. It's possible that the guesses made here are wrong or inaccurate. Even when predictions are correct, there is always a chance that products could change or may be canceled. Much like rumors, nothing is certain until it's officially announced and released. The features discussed below are probably not live yet, or may o

Google Assistant now works with more than 10,000 smart home devices

Image
The Google Assistant's bag of smart home tricks is growing at breakneck speed. At the beginning of this year, the Assistant supported  1,500 devices ; by May, that figure had ballooned to  more than 5,000 . Now, with little fanfare, the Google Home support page has been updated to show that more than 10,000 devices from more than 1,000 manufacturers play nice with Google's ecosystem. Everything from TVs and stereos to kitchen appliances and air conditioners can be controlled by voice via Google Assistant; if you can imagine a voice-activated smart home scenario, there's probably a way to make it happen. You can peruse Google's  list of Assistant partners  to get an idea of the breadth of home tasks the platform can help you with. While 10,000 is an impressive figure, Amazon Alexa has a considerable lead over Google with support for  more than 20,000 smart home products . Still, at the rate Google Assistant is picking up steam, it wouldn't be surprising to s

For years now, the quirky feature of most wireless headphones has been, well, wires. Now, thanks to companies like MJYUN, we have truly wireless headphones and at an affordable price. In fact, 15 of our readers will be getting them at the price of "truly free" and the rest of you can take advantage of a 45% off coupon. When I say truly wireless, I mean not just no wire connecting to your phone, computer, or other host device, but no wire connecting the buds either. I know that many "wireless" headphones I've used in the past have had trouble staying in because the cord connecting the buds constantly twists, gets caught, and so on. With these, you just won't be dealing with those kinds of problems. The sweat proofing makes them a great option for runners, who are going to be most aggravated by corded headphones that snag with every stride. The MJYUN truly wireless ear buds come in both white and black and include a portable charging case that gives

Microsoft pulls Windows 10 October 2018 Update after reports of documents being deleted

Image
Microsoft has stopped distributing its latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The software giant started rolling out the update during the company’s Surface event earlier this week, but  some Windows 10 immediately noticed their documents were being deleted . “We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” says Microsoft on its  support site  for Windows Update. Microsoft is now recommending that affected users contact the company directly, and if you’ve manually downloaded the October update then “please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.” It’s not clear how many Windows 10 users are affected by the problem, but even if it’s a small percentage it’s still surprising this issue was never picked up during Microsoft’s vast testing of the October update.
