A future version of Android will have a manual device backup option

Image
Google has offered some rudimentary backup functionality in Android since the 2.0 days, but it improved backup functionality in 6.0 Marshmallow. However, you still have to trust that the Google Drive backups are happening as there are no user-facing controls. That's going to change in a future version of Android, though. This news comes from Google itself in an  issue tracker thread , and for once it wasn't the product of an internet mob adding hundreds of stars. Someone posted that Android ought to have the option to manually start a backup rather than trusting the process to happen when the device is plugged in. A Googler said the issue had been passed to the dev team for consideration the very next day. Several days after that, Google said it would be considered for a future Android release. A few more days and the issue was closed with the message "The requested feature will be available in a future release." So, Android Q (or maybe even 9.1) should have

Lexar’s making a glorious return to the world of flash storage

Image
It looks like Lexar is back on its feet. Back in 2017, the staple company in the world of digital storage  threw in the towel  and announced that it’d be ceasing retail operations that year. But according to an announcement spotted by  CameraJabber   earlier this week, the company is back in business, and will be ready to return to producing and globally shipping flash storage as of this fall. “I’m extremely excited to re-introduce the Lexar brand to our worldwide customers,” Lexar CEO Huabo Cai said in a statement. “Lexar is dynamic, has superior research and development capabilities, and has a deep understanding of our customer’s needs. At the same time, we are confident that we can expand the Lexar business successfully in different markets globally.” This is the first news that we’re hearing from Lexar  since it was acquired  by a new parent company, Longsys, after Micron  shut down the brand  in June of 2017. Right now, there’s no clear details about whether there will be

US reportedly pressuring Facebook to break Messenger’s encryption over MS-13 investigation

Image
The US Department of Justice is reportedly trying to have Facebook break the end-to-end encryption of its popular Messenger chat app so that the government can spy on a suspect’s “ongoing voice conversations” in a criminal investigation related to the notorious MS-13 gang. Facebook has so far pushed back against the DoJ’s request, according to  a new Reuters scoop  on the situation. End-to-end encryption makes it so that only the participants of a conversation can see the messages and content that it contains. Facebook does not have access to the data. Reuters says that the surveillance case is under seal in California, so no documents or information about it are publicly accessible. And it seems like tensions are rising fast: earlier this week, the government reportedly sought to hold Facebook in contempt of court for refusing to comply with its demands. Facebook’s position is that it would either have to remove encryption from Messenger altogether or “hack” the individual t

Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti leak reveals a very powerful graphics card

Image
Nvidia has been teasing its upcoming GeForce event for weeks now, and it looks like the company will unveil a new series of  GeForce RTX 2080 graphics cards  on Monday. While Nvidia typically launches Ti (Titanium) versions of its most powerful graphics cards after the base models are launched,  VideoCardz.com reports  that Nvidia will launch both an RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti next week. VideoCardz has provided what it claims are specifications for Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, and it will allegedly include 11GB of GDDR6 memory with 4352 CUDA cores. That’s more than 20 percent more than the existing 3584 CUDA cores found on the GTX 1080 Ti, and 70 percent more than the base GTX 1080. It’s not clear what speed the card is clocked at, but that amount of CUDA cores will make it a very powerful graphics card either way. The improved memory bandwidth on GDDR6 will also mean this a very capable card. Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti is clearly powerful, but the base RTX 2080 sees a more moderate bo

One of the world's largest storage companies is investing into processing, here's why

Western Digital sent shockwaves around the hardware world last year when it announced support for the open-source RISC-V platform. Although still an upstart in the market, RISC-V has been quickly gaining momentum as an alternative to hardware from the likes of  AMD  or  Intel , leading many firms to sign up. So why is WD throwing its weight behind RISC-V? We spoke to company CTO Martin Fink to find out more. The 10 best NAS devices Why did WD, a storage company, decide to actively back the RISC-V architecture? The primary reason Western Digital is migrating to RISC-V is to expedite the ability to innovate.   As data workloads are evolving, new requirements surrounding data are generated.  We not only need to store data, we need to extract value from the data as quickly as possible. The “general-purpose” architectures that have been in use for decades are just that, general purpose. These legacy general-purpose built architectures are not conducive for supporting the
