Panasonic Toughbook CF-33 is the Windows 10 2-in-1 that can go anywhere

Image
The Windows 10 2-in-1 market is full of options fitting just about every possible user need, from tablets that convert to notebooks, notebooks that convert to tablets, convertibles with 360-degree flip-around displays, and more. Now, Panasonic has updated its Toughbook line of rugged devices with a new Windows 10 2-in-1 of its own. Toughbooks are known for being designed to withstand the most punishing users and environments, and the new Toughbook CF-33 appears to be a fitting new member of the line. Panasonic introduced the machine at Mobile World Congress 2017 and Microsoft highlighted the new machine in a  post on its Windows blog . The  Toughbook CF-33  is a tablet with a detachable keyboard, sporting a 12-inch display with a very Microsoft Surface-like 3:2 aspect ratio that provides more vertical screen real estate. The display’s resolution is QHD (2,160 x 1,440), which works out to a relatively sharp 216 pixels per inch and it offers an extremely bright panel at 1200 ni

Panasonic improves image stabilization on two cameras with firmware update

Image
Panasonic released minor firmware updates for its Lumix G85 and GX85 mirrorless cameras (also known as the G80/81 and GX80 , respectively, in other markets). The new firmware — version 1.2 on both cameras — promises quieter image stabilization in both still and video modes, while also adding support for Dual I.S. 2 stabilization when using the Leica-branded 100-400mm f/4-6.3 telephoto zoom lens on the G85 . Previously, the sensor-shift stabilization in both the G85 and GX85 produced an audible hum when in standby mode or during video recording. While not an indication of anything being wrong, the sound nonetheless ranged from being an annoyance to photographers to a real problem for video shooters working in quiet places, where the noise would be picked up by the camera’s microphone. We have not tested either camera post-update, but the new firmware should at least lessen the impact of operational noise caused by the stabilization system. Dual I.S. 2 is the latest versi

SD cards will transfer data at more than 600MB per second, thanks to UHS-III

Image
To meet the future demands of gigabit wireless communication, 360-degree cameras, and 8K video, the  SD Association  (SDA) announced a new UHS-III bus interface which will potentially double transfer rates over today’s fastest UHS-II cards. With a theoretical peak speed of 624 megabytes per second, UHS-III will bring the SD format to levels of performance previously only available in CFast 2.0 and XQD cards. While there is little need for such performance today, UHS-III will ensure that the SD format remains relevant going forward. “SD memory card capabilities continue to expand, paving the way for new and highly anticipated imaging and video features, from virtual reality to 8K video,” SDA president Brian Kumagai said in a statement. As SD card capacities continue to approach the theoretical maximum of two terabytes, a faster transfer speed will also speed up the process of offloading large amounts of data. Regardless of the demands of a camera or other host device, saving tim

Nikon's flagship DSLR gets a sleek new finish for the firm's 100-year anniversary

Nikon will be celebrating its first 100 years in style — or rather, with two new restyled cameras. During the CP+ show in Japan over the weekend, Nikon displayed  a special edition D5, D500 and lens set  to commemorate the company’s 100th year. The special edition D5 is expected to be sold in a unique gunmetal finish along with a matching case, leather shoulder strap, 100th-anniversary body cap and a special edition booklet. The D5’s little sibling, the D500 will also be released in a special edition version with the same gunmetal finish in a smaller gunmetal case along with that same body-cap style and shoulder strap upgrade. Nikon will also make three lenses with a matching finish, the 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8 and a new 70 – 200mm f/2.8E. All three are included in another gumetal case, suggesting the trio will be sold as a set rather than individually. The Nikon D5 is the company’s flagship camera, boasting best-in-class specs. The D500 carries a similar feature list

Report: Nikon in early development stages for new mirrorless system cameras

Image
Mirrorless cameras are grabbing all of the headlines these days and for years, photographers have been wondering when Nikon may come to market with a serious mirrorless camera. Nikon, like Canon, has long been trying to avoid the inevitable regarding mirrorless cameras — despite pushing its ‘V’ series of small-sensor mirrorless cameras. Well, Canon has come to market with its first serious mirrorless camera in the EOS M5 and now reports out of Japan are indicating Nikon has plans to launch a serious mirrorless camera line of its own as well. The news comes from  Yahoo Japan , in which representatives from Nikon say that they will be launching multiple mirrorless system cameras in the future. What the comment and report do not indicate is when these mirrorless cameras may be from coming, as well as what sort of sensor format they will be. Some speculated that Nikon may try and take on Sony and come to market with its own full-frame mirrorless lineup, but there is no hard evidenc
