Strava’s CEO showed solidarity for immigrants by running a route that spelled ‘Freedom4All’

Image
Mark Gainey, the co-founder and chief executive of  fitness-tracking app Strava , has a message for immigrants who are impacted by President Donald Trump’s recent executive order: “Freedom4All.” Only Gainey didn’t just send a memo to his company, or tweet something showing solidarity: he ran 6.8 miles through  tech-centric Palo Alto  and spelled out the words with his running route. “This one is for our immigrants ... Remove the ban and think clearly about what truly makes this country great ... Liberty and freedom,” Gainey wrote as the description for his workout, which was posted in the Strava app, of course. His words were punctuated by a somewhat crude, albeit very impressive, GPS-mapped route below them. Gainey’s message is just the latest in  a series of memos coming from Silicon Valley’s most prominent tech leaders  as they react to Trump’s executive order around immigration and attempt to address the needs of employees who are impacted by the ban. Earlier today, employe

Microsoft joins Amazon in lawsuit over Trump's immigration ban

Image
Tech companies are joining forces with the Washington state government to fight against  Donald Trump’s recent immigration-related executive order . Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a lawsuit today against Trump’s order, which bars  legal  immigrants  and refugees   from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US and bans  Syrian refugees  indefinitely. Now, at least three tech companies — Microsoft, Amazon, and Expedia — are joining that legal fight. A Microsoft spokesman told  Reuters  that the company is providing information about the effect of the order in order to "be supportive." They also would "be happy to testify further if needed." MICROSOFT, AMAZON, AND EXPEDIA ARE ALL BASED IN THE SEATTLE, WASHINGTON AREA Both Amazon and Expedia are also preparing statements that demonstrate the order’s negative impact on their business. In  an email to employees , Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos wrote that the company’s legal team "has prepar

Dropbox rolls out new business-oriented plans and features

Image
Dropbox is really useful for regular people, but the service has also been growing its business features recently. Today, Dropbox is announcing several new business-y features, and some business plans to go along with them. You'll pay a little more than a regular consumer license, but you get more features. First up, Dropbox Paper is out of beta. It's a collaborative workspace for text, code, images, and so on. That's not specifically a business thing as anyone can use it, but Dropbox hopes businesses in particular will take advantage of it. Updates are coming to the mobile app with support for offline mode and 21 new languages. The new Smart Sync system is specifically for business users, and it's available on Windows and Mac. It allows all users of a business account to have Dropbox files integrated into the file system, but not actually downloaded until they're needed. So, even if you've got far more data in the cloud than local space, you can still

[Deal Alert] Pipe music from your phone through your old car's speakers with an Aukey FM Transmitter for only $6.99 (50% off)

New cars these days are awesome, especially those with Android Auto or other connected technology. Seamless integration with your mobile device is a dream come true for techies and makes a daily commute or family road trip a much more pleasant experience. That is, if you can afford to drive a nearly brand new car. For the rest of us plebs, driving a car new enough to have a CD player in the dash is a bonus.  The good news is that there are several workarounds for connecting to a car's audio system if an AUX port or Bluetooth connection isn't available. One of the simplest solutions is an FM transmitter. Plug the transmitter into your charging port, connect the plug into the headphone jack of your phone and then tune your radio and transmitter to the same unused channel and boom, you're in business. Aukey, one of my favorite manufacturers of cheap, yet well-made, phone accessories has a sleek  little FM transmitter  on sale today for half off its normal price of $13.99.

Nextbit has been acquired by Razer, promises Robin patches through February 2018

Image
It's rare to see a new maker come out with a smartphone that's actually competent, but that's what Nextbit did with the Robin in 2015. It wasn't a perfect phone, but it was neat and stylish. There's been no word on what Nextbit's next move was after the Robin, and now we know why. Nextbit has been acquired by Razer. Yes, the maker of all those gamer-oriented keyboards and mice (and other things). The financials of the deal are not available at this time. According the the announcement on Nextbit's site, the Robin and all accessories are no longer being offered for sale. However, Nextbit will honor the warranty on all products for 6 months from today. Security patches will also continue rolling out through Febriary 2018. The company will continue operating as an independent company within Razer, working on "unique mobile design and experiences." It's not clear if that means smartphones, but I'm not sure why else Razer would buy a smar
